Project of Assessment of Cement Kilns as Resource Recycling Centers

Absrtact
The purpose of this project was to assess the feasibility of the cement kiln as a resource recycling center. First, this project collected the research papers and practical reports about alternative cement raw materials, and revealed the effects of wastes on the cement manufacturing and cement properties. The problems occurring in cement plants were also explored. Second, this project surveyed the cement specifications, the air pollutant emission limits of cement plants, and the acceptance criteria of alternative raw materials for Taiwan and other countries. A pre-processing facility of alternative cement raw materials was also studied in this project, and the model of pre-processing facility and the regulatory issues were examined. Another important work of this project was to select four wastes as alternative raw materials and to conduct a testing manufacturing. During the cement manufacturing with the four wastes, the exhaust gases and the ambient air quality were monitored, and the resulting cement products were studied using several leaching methods. The results showed that the air pollutant emissions and cement properties were not affected by the wastes reused. This project concluded that a cement kiln is highly feasible to be a resource recycling center, and this can promote the sustainable resources. In practice, listing more Type R wastes, increasing the limits of chloride in cement, simplifying the administrative procedure, and creating a platform for waste exchange can significantly increase the amount of alternative raw materials used in cement plants.
